California Scholars Confront Regents on UC Politicization

John Ellis

Editor's note: In April 2012 the California Association of Scholars (CAS) published the results of a two-year study, A Crisis of Competence: The Corrupting Effect of Political Activism in the University of California. The report documented curricula that promote political activism, in violation of UC regulations. For example, one course aims to be a “training ground” for “advocates committed to racial justice theory and practice.” The CAS directed A Crisis of Competence to the UC Board of Regents, whose responsibility it is "to see that the University remain aloof from politics and never function as an instrument for the advance of partisan interest." (2005 Policy on Course Content of the Regents)

Since then the California Association of Scholars has been in correspondence with members of the administration of the University of California, who have failed to respond to the substance of the report or evaluate the evidence brought therein. Today in a letter to Chair Sherry Lansing the CAS again challenges the Board of Regents to address the issue of politicization at the University of California. Below are the pdfs of the CAS letter to the Board of Regents, CAS's rebuttal of the Academic Senate Leadership’s July 2012 response, and a complete exchange of letters and documents between CAS and UC, ordered chronologically.
