Who or what is to blame for the palpable degradation of higher ed? Some establishment voices snarl at critics and innovators, but in my latest Forbes piece, I argue that they're attacking the wrong people. The problems in higher ed—declining standards, rising costs, emphasis on job training rather than deep thinking—are all unintended consequences of decades of federal meddling. For some reason, "progressives" just can't grasp that current problems are usually the result of their own interference in the past.
