Collegiate Press Roundup 4-22-10

Glenn Ricketts

We present our regular sampling of student journalists and editors, as they address various and sundry topics in their campus newspapers.  The issues this week range from diversity, drug use, and the Tea Party, to grade inflation, apologies for inciting hate, and living among the unwashed.

  1. Tsk, Tsk, Tsk, - the metropolitan editor of the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa’s Crimson White describes how it’s become possible to coexist with the less enlightened folks who live near the university.
  2. Although the night hasn’t evidently been “lost” on the Smith College campus, The Sophian notes that Smithies are going to take it back anyway.
  3. An op-ed columnist at UCLA’s Daily Bruin sizes up the idea of “teaching tolerance,” and suggests it can’t be done.
  4. Should the University of Iowa hire a new “chief diversity officer?”  Two students in the Daily Iowan respond, pro and con.
  5. Writing in the Chicago Maroon, an op-ed regular from the University of Chicago thinks it’s especially vital to achieve “diversity” on the Supreme Court.
  6. After attending a Tea Party rally, a columnist for The Dartmouth in New Hampshire expresses surprise that those present weren’t the rabid, irrational fire-eaters he’d expected to encounter.  Many of his respondents take issue, however.
  7. How can cultural diversity be preserved in today’s rapidly changing world?  A writer billed as the “Unorthodox Traditionalist” in Grinnell College’s Scarlet and Black says that large countries such as the United States and China need to be broken into smaller units so regional linguistic patterns – the key to “diversity” – can survive.
  8. At Arizona State University, a student argues in The State Press that drugs should be legal and available because they give him such intense pleasure.
  9. In the University of Virginia’s Cavalier Daily, the editors urge the school’s Board of Visitors to implement a broader antidiscrimination policy that would include “gender identity and expression.” Perhaps UVA will insure students’ sex change surgeries as the University of Pennsylvania has announced it will do. U Penn calls it “gender confirmation.”
  10. A student at Georgetown University offers advice for the genuine observance of Earth Day in The Hoya.
  11. The editor of The Diamondback at the University of Maryland does its president one better: he’ll apologize for inciting “hate speech,” whereas the prez didn’t think it was necessary.
  12. In the Amherst Student, the editor-in-chief takes aim at grade inflation which, in her view, “devalues” education these days.
