A common complaint with regard to American college grads is that they write very poorly. (An old friend who recently retired from the legal profession tells me that the problem is even apparent among graduates of top law schools.) According to this story, many British college students have the same difficulty. Their earlier schooling neglected the hard task of teaching them how to write and upon entering university, many discover that fact.
What I don't know is whether British universities allow students to coast along to their degrees without doing much to improve their writing skill, as is so common here.
