Massachusetts Aligns Further With The Common Core

National Association of Scholars

An update from NAS board member Sandra Stotsky on state-specific Common Core news: the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) has voted in favor of a standardized test call MCAS 2.0. Stotsky says the test is “100% Common Core-aligned,” though it has been mislabeled a “hybrid.” According to her, citizens and media have been misled to believe that BESE’s decision was “a blow” to Common Core in the state. Stotsky concludes: “The public needs an honest picture of the unraveling of the Common Core experiment since it can no longer count on accurate information by media that choose to limit their sources of information.”

One place to find such an honest picture is the 2015 book Drilling through the Core: Why Common Core Is Bad for America, edited by NAS president Peter Wood and with contributions from math and English scholars including Sandra Stotsky, Ze’ev Wurman, R. James Milgram, Mark Bauerlein, and Anthony Esolen.
