"Fixing" UNC's African American Studies Department

George Leef

In this week's Pope Center Clarion Call, Jay Schalin writes about the professor chosen to head UNC's African American Studies Department after the former head was dismissed for "teaching" courses for athletes that required no work. The new department head will not allow that, but unfortunately her writings show that she is cut from very radical cloth.

In this Pope Center piece published several years ago, John McWhorter argued that African American Studies should not be about the instilling of a grievance mentality in the students. It seems that UNC has ignored his advice.
